Targeted traffic

Overview
You've just finished putting the final touches to your latest website creation. You've checked all your links, optimized your site for the search engines and your ready for off. You submit your website to the main search engines. Now you want to get web traffic to your website. You don't want just anyone visiting your website, you want people that are going to be interested in what you have to say, what you have to sell! You need targeted traffic. Probably, you also need a mobile application for your online business. If you've decided to create your own one, make sure you have a promotional strategy. Nowadays it's so easy to buy ios downloads that it's a crime, if you don't use this opportinity! But let's back to targeted traffic.

Search engines
In the early days, once your website has gone live, getting targeted traffic is difficult - unless of course you pay for it. The primary source of targeted traffic has to be search engines. After all, you are listed with them and they 'understand' your website content and theme. So for example, if you sell jewelry and your website theme is based around jewelry, no search engine is going to send yo visitors looking for 'JO's greasy breakfast bar'! Well you would hope not. Search engine developers spend a lot of time, money and research to ensure that searchers get valid search results. After all, its what keeps them in business.

Referrals from search engines (and other targeted traffic sources) are more likely to buy from your site than non-targeted referrals. However, as stated, this is hard to achieve in the early days unless you pay for it or use other techniques.

Pay-per-click (PPC) advertising
This is one from the search engines.
If you try to search something on Google...

You will notice that a number of 'sponsored links' appear on the right hand side. If you click on one of these links then someone will owe Google some money. Google are only paid when someone clicks on sponsored link not for displaying the links. This is known as pay-per-click (PPC) advertising. Many search engines have similar mechanisms. PPC advertising is very effective. Using Google adwords for example, you can specify which search phrases or keywords you wish to target. You write your advert and specify your landing page. Then you specify how much you wish to spend for each keyword. Google will then display your advert when a relevant search is performed. If someone then clicks your link you pay - if they don't you don't. Simple really, well there's more to it than that but hopefully you get the idea. PPC's are also great for promoting your affiliate programs.

Classifieds
OK - what if you don't want to spend a small fortune. Classifieds are probably about the next best thing to PPC's. Some websites also allow you to place a classified advert for free. A typical advert, like a PPC advert, allows you to specify advertisement text and a landing page. Classifieds also have an additional bonus, the website hosting your advert essentially has a link back to your website. This increases your link popularity, a common Internet marketing technique that helps raise your search engine ranking.

Articles
If you have something to say about a particular topic then get pen to paper. Actually, make that fingers to keyboard. Write articles, like this one. Not as effective as PPC's or classifieds but they still work. Articles also have the same benefit as classifieds they help to improve your link popularity.

Summary
Getting seen on the Internet is hard work these days. You can't afford to sit around and hope you must be proactive in marketing and promoting your website. Strive to improve your link popularity to improve your search engine ranking. Its hard work but it pays off.
